IPC President Pays Tribute to Norbert Kucera Following His Passing

nternational Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons has honoured the memory of Norbert Kucera, Secretary General of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF), following his passing after a brief illness.

A lifelong advocate for wheelchair basketball, Norbert played a pivotal role in shaping the sport through his expertise, leadership, and dedication. His international journey began as a referee in 1987, leading to his first Paralympic officiating role at the Seoul 1988 Games. Over the years, he served as Chairman of the World Technical Commission before assuming the position of IWBF Secretary General in 2018.

Norbert was instrumental in the development and governance of wheelchair basketball, ensuring its continued growth and impact worldwide. His tireless efforts to promote inclusion and fair competition left a lasting mark on the sport and the Paralympic Movement.

Andrew Parsons, IPC President, stated:

"We are deeply saddened by Norbert’s passing, and our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. His dedication to modernizing IWBF and wheelchair basketball was extraordinary, and his global impact immeasurable. Norbert was a valued member of the Paralympic community, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him."

"On behalf of IWBF, we extend our deepest condolences to Norbert’s family, friends, and loved ones. He was more than a colleague—he was family to us, and his absence will be deeply felt. Norbert’s contributions went beyond his official roles; he was a guiding force, always striving to elevate the sport and support those around him. He played a crucial role in modernizing our sport’s structures, strengthening its place within the Paralympic Movement.
His legacy will endure through the generations of athletes, referees, and administrators who continue to benefit from his vision and leadership. IWBF will forever be grateful for his immense contributions. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the incredible impact he had on wheelchair basketball and the wider sporting community."

Norbert Kucera’s passion and dedication leave an indelible legacy, ensuring his influence on wheelchair basketball will be felt for years to come.
